Irish Adventures Begin: Dublin to Killarney

After a grand breakfast, we rallied the troops to embark on our first adventure, driving from Dublin to Killarney in the Southwest. We would have made Grandma Carney proud, pocketing the left over cute jams and honeys in mini jars to use later in the trip.

Poor Nana woke up not feeling well and ended up having COVID, which kept her in bed the next few days.

We had 4 rental cars between us. One car didn't have GPS or cell service so caravanning proved challenging. The daily (hourly?) negotiations with the kids of who was riding with whom also tested all of our patience!

On the road!

Passed out between cousin Mike and Emily!

Passing through lots of colorful villages on the drive.

A stop to stretch legs en route.

Nap time for the girls!

Look at those colorful fields!

Lunch outside of Waterford. Some roadworks prevented us from driving through the city to see it.

I'd wanted to visit Kinsale and it was a short detour so 2 of 4 cars stopped to see this very colorful fishing village. The kids were over it so Nana and Pops drove the kids to our B&B while Pete and I stayed on with Mike and Emily, having dinner in town. There was live music streaming out of many pubs in town and I wish we'd had more time to enjoy it.

It was a pretty hour and a half drive to join the others at Inveraray Farm. We found some beautiful ruins during the golden hour.

The rest of the family went to dinner and settled into the B&B.

The B&B was located at the end of the Gap of Dunloe and had lovely views from the garden.

Carneys Take Ireland Day 1

When the school year ended in June, Nana and Pops flew over and we joined a subset (17!) of my Carney relatives on a Homeland trip to Ireland! My aunt Elaine had always dreamed of going and we made a grand trip of it!

We met up outside Dublin in the lovely seaside suburb of Malahide. Everyone else arrived on red eyes so we had a relaxing day around the hotel and town, gearing up for a week of adventures.

My parents had saved a sweatshirt my sister and I had as kids and brought it along. How is stayed so white is beyond me!

First order of business was a walk into town for fish and chips.

Back at the hotel we headed to the pool with the kids to burn some energy.

Part of the crew enjoying a pint (or 2!)

Pete and I stayed on for another drink and couldn't believe our eyes when we saw a nun enter the pub as we were leaving!
