Father's Day at the Forum

Our first full day in Rome was Father's Day, so naturally, the dads decided on our itinerary. We had a full, full day exploring Capitoline Hill, The Forum and The Colosseum. Wow!! Seriously impressive ruins and magnificent buildings. It was overwhelming, there was so much to see! Pete, our resident Classics major gave us history tidbits along the way and was in total history nerdom heaven! Pete had been to Rome before as part of his Europe trip after college so he had seen the major sites already, but was still thrilled to visit again.  The rest of us were total newbies. Pictures are below, but first an ode to two wonderful fathers.

Great dads....
Look cool without (??) trying.

Prepping for the day ahead
Flex their muscles when needed.
Rome is not so stroller friendly.

Could easily pass as locals.
"Mama Mia"
Give piggyback rides on demand.
I'm a little big, but my dad used to do this when I was a wee bit smaller.
Are fun to explore with.

Are excellent at diapering.

Make this girl very happy!

Happy Father's Day to two of the best!
Ok, now onto photos of the day.
Capitoline Hill
Oh, you know, just some super ancient frescos. NBD.
A funny thing happened on the way to the Forum...
Romulus and Remus statue. Brought me back to my high school latin class days.
Arch of Septimius Severus. Pete dropping some Roman facts on Nana.
The Column of Trajan- Pete's favorite!
Happy Historian.

Pete enjoys Corinthian columns.
Looking down to the Forum.

Holy smokes, check out those ruins!

Trajan in front of his Forum.

Jude post-lunch. Pay no mind to the undone button and fly. It is easy to over indulge in Italian food!
This boy melts my heart.

The arch of Titus. Heading into the Forum, ready to be wowed!
Temple of Antoninus Pius and Faustina (though much of what you see now is a converted church).

Camera shy
Palatine Hill. The views over the forum were worth the hike in the heat!
Once out of the Forum, we made a quick stop to the neighboring Colosseum, an impressive site. Though being there brought back memories from the bull fights we saw in Arles, France, which made me sad again.

There was a concert in the church next to our apartment that evening. Here, the singers rehearse in the square.

The Durneys on Tour: USA Summer 2015

We have just arrived home this evening from Tuscany with my parents and are off tomorrow for 3 weeks in the good 'ole US of A. We found out flight prices to the US skyrocket in July after we had booked our trip to Italy, hence the very short lay over at home. The trip was planned around meeting our newest niece! Pete's brother and our sister-in-law had a sweet baby girl, Addy, just over 3 weeks ago and we can't wait to meet and snuggle her! We decided to make the trip extra long to fit in seeing as many loved ones as possible.

So without further ado, tour dates are as follows:

June 30-July 3 NYC
July 3-5 Twin Lakes, CT
July 6-8 Williamstown, MA
July 8-11 NYC
July 11-15 Chapel Hill, NC
July 15-20 Northern VA, DC and Maryland

We hope to see a lot of you! Please be in touch if you are around and we are in your area!

XO,
The Globetrotting Durneys

The Durneys last week in St. Peter's Basilica. Lots of photos and trip highlights from Italy to share when I get a second to breathe!

When in Rome: Giorno Uno

On Saturday, we flew two hours south to Rome! It was a city that we had heard so many wonderful things about, but admittedly, I was nervous (despite living 7 years in NYC). I think I read too many warnings about scams and thievery. Well, needless to say, that was all for nothing. We came out unscathed and lovers of Rome!

While waiting for our flight to depart Amsterdam, Jude was taken with this group of brothers (well, the oldest in particular). He walked right over and stood with him longer than he'll stand for most things (ice cream/gelato aside). The brothers were equally taken with him and while waiting for our luggage in Rome, they played with him at the luggage carousel, being very cautious with his fingers. So sweet!
New friends before the flight
Jude gets really stimulated on airplanes so it seems a miracle when this happens! Apart from my arm that lost sensation, it was a great start to the vacation.
Friends playing with Jude in Rome.

We used a car service at the Rome airport. It was only 7 euro more than a taxi and ensured that we'd have a van big enough to accommodate Jude's car seat. The driver took us all the way to our small little piazza- Largo de Librari no matter the pedestrian only signs!
Our AirBnB apartment was just to the left of the hidden church in the piazza.
Wonderful location to stay in Rome right off Campo di Fiori. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go.
Rooftop terrace at the apartment.
Street scene near the apartment.
After a brief settling-in, we headed out to see the Pantheon and our surrounding neighborhood. One wrong turn led us to the river, not the Pantheon. Whoops!
I had been told by other lovers of Rome that ancient architecture was part of the landscape, but it was still awesome to see with my own eyes. Here at Largo di Torre Argentina there was some spectacular relics. Pete was psyched. Jude was gellin'.

We did finally make it to the Pantheon, an impressive sight. Some tourists found Jude more interesting though.

Jude's admirers
I follow a handful of celebrities on Instagram and had seen that Reese Witherspoon was in Rome a few days before we arrived. She posted a selfie in the Saint Ignacio church, claiming it to be her favorite church in Rome, so of course we needed to check it out. It was stunning and really cool to see a group of nuns practicing for a concert. Jude did what he does best in historic churches. I'll spare him the embarrassment and leave the rest to your imagination.

The scene of the crime.

Back outside, a downpour caught us by surprise. Thank goodness for the enterprising man running to sheltered tourist groups selling umbrellas for 10 Euro. We slipped giddily through the medieval streets of Rome, already enchanted after only a few hours time.

Apart from the great company, the beauty of traveling with parents is all of the free babysitting! While in Rome, we would take turns going out at night to find dinner- easy to do given our very central location. Pete and I were given the first night out and went to a spot recommended by his brother. Afterwards, we got the obligatory gelato and strolled the streets taking in the sights of Piazza Navona, Trevi fountain (under construction), Capitoline hill, more churches and the Pantheon by night. What a magical city!

Nana and Pop's second visit to Amsterdam

When my parents were in town last week, we had two very Dutch evenings. One was spent cruising the canals of Amsterdam with a picnic dinner and friends Paul and Andrea. Nana and Pops each got a turn at the steer. The evening was cut short by an unexpected downpour (like I said, a very Dutch evening). We were happy to have driven into the city as it was a very cold, wet ride home! On our last evening in Amsterdam, we had our Dutch neighbors over for a BBQ. Vicky and Ton asked if they could bring a traditional Dutch food, Hollandse nieuwe haring as an appetizer. Dutch herring is served with chopped onions and pickles and eaten whole, down the gullet! When in Amsterdam...

Steering the boat!
What are you looking at, Swan?
A few days before their daughter was born!
I'll admit, it does not look that appetizing.

And while we are happy to show my parents the Dutch lifestyle, they are happy to have the time to hang with Jude.
