Lynton, Lynmouth, Exford and Ice Cream with a View!

Yesterday was a lovely, full day with the fam. We started off with a drive to Lynton, a hilltop town on the coast that is connected to the lower town on Lynmouth by a water-powered funicular. We stopped in the charming hilltop church where the organist was rehearsing Pachelbel's Canon, one of my favorite! Then we made the harrowing walk down the zig zag path to Lynmouth- an adorable harbor town alongside a river. We took the funicular up to the top and had lunch at Charlie Friday's. We shared a delicious cider, a drink that I love, but often forget about!

Fuscias and Pachelbel's Canon floating out of the church- heavenly!

It was nap time so we used the time to drive inland, through the moors to Exford, where we stopped at the White Horse Inn from a drink. Pete has been really happy with his beers here! Exford had a really lovely town green with playground so we happily stayed and played in the afternoon sun. Two women on horseback were riding through town and stopped so that Jude could see the horses. They were super friendly and shared a tip for our drive back to Porlock- an ice cream place with amazing views.

The drive was as beautiful as the women claimed- across the moors with views to the sea. And when we found the ice cream spot (just an ice cream truck along the road)- it was perfection. Mint chocolate chip with views to die for! We really like it here :)

Jude took an interest in my camera today and wanted to try taking some pictures of "mommy and Maeve." Not too bad for his first attempt. The second photo is by Pete, Jude isn't that good yet!

A day in Dunster

Apart from booking the flights, accommodation and car rental for this trip, nothing else was planned. After we settled in on our first night, Pete turned to me and said, "what are we going to do all week??" He must have been surprised that I hadn't planned out our days in advance as usually happens with our trips. We had a list of places to check out from my friend, a list of local events from the tourist office and an England guidebook that only had 3 pages on the region. Traveling now with two kiddos lends itself to total spontaneity and so far it is going great. No point in planning your day around a toddler nap that you expect to happen around noon when your toddler decides to pass out at 10am in the car.

Yesterday's day of spontaneity led us to the village of Dunster where we did some shopping, found the local playground, stopped for lunch in a sunny garden, toured the castle and grounds, checked out the rocky beach and ended the day in Porlock Weir with pizza al fresco. We continue to be charmed by the local villages and amazed by the local scenery!

Dunster Castle

I decided to quickly tour the castle while Maeve was sleeping and Jude was playing lawn games with Pete. I didn't have high expectations, but I ended up feeling like I stepped onto the set of Downton Abbey!

Painted leather panels- the castle's greatest treasure.
