When we were planning this trip, we tried to find a balance between seeing a lot of the country and traveling with a baby. Jude hasn't spent much time in cars being a city baby so when he is strapped in his car seat, he is pretty unhappy. We did our best on the trip to time the drives with his naps, it just meant that we drove in silence for many hours :) It also helps that he is eating solids now so we could placate him from time to time with snacks.
We had heard great things about the Isle of Skye and decided to go for the long drive to get there to see what everyone was raving about. On day three, we took off from our B&B and headed Northwest through the highlands to the Isle. There was on and off rain and clouds all day, but most of the time was spent driving anyway. We made a stop in Fort William and walked along the locks connecting the lochs.
When I pictured the Highlands of Scotland, I imagined looming mountains with deep valleys below. While this was true, in my vision, everything was dark green and grey. I thought that late October wouldn't actually be a good time to go because of cold weather and dark days. I didn't really consider that we'd be going at the height of fall foliage and how this would turn the mountains gorgeous shades of auburns, golds and yellows. I was pleasantly surprised by this and by the weather that we had!

As you approach the Isle of Skye, you come upon Eilean Donan castle, gorgeously situated at the junction of three lochs. We admired it from the warmth of the connecting cafe as Scotland (and the rest of the UK and Europe) was getting the tail end of Hurricane Gonzalo. Our home for the next two nights was a self catering cottage, just over the bridge on the Isle of Skye. This was very fortunate as the following day, the bridge to the Isle was closed due to the winds from the Hurricane. We wouldn't have made it on the Isle at all if we had stayed on the other side!
