Mountain towns of Fataga and Tejeda

Having had some good beach and sun time, we were ready to explore the island in our two remaining days in Gran Canaria. We drove up, up, around and around through the mountains to check out some of the island's hill towns.

Pete's driving skills impressed me as he navigated the narrow, windy roads all while watching out for the many cyclists!

We made it to Fataga, where we found the local amphitheater. Opa and the kids put on quite the show!
'

It was a tiny town so it didn't take long to walk the cobblestoned streets, taking in the mountain views and white washed buildings.

I know some parents bribe their kids to take pictures with lollipops or popsicles. Ours take salami bribes.

A pit stop in a small tienda for some cookies.

Serious cycling!
We continued on to Tejeda in the middle of the island. We used our usual sight seeing trick of telling the kids "we are looking for a playground." This time, they spotted it before we did. We convinced them to see the local church before heading there to play before lunch.

Another playground with an incredible view!

More yummy tapas and local specialties for lunch.

Time to explore town!

We choose a different route home to minimize the curvy roads. We stopped briefly at Cruz de Tejeda for the views before heading East to the main highway. Once we were on the North side of the island, we noted how much more green and lush it was. We had chosen the South side as the mountains are known to keep any bad weather at bay, but in doing so, we missed out on the more tropical feel. We drove through some really colorful neighborhoods!
