On New Year's Day we took the metro to Retiro Park and joined the locals for a slow start to 2026. We were highly entertained by an impressive street performer, checked out the playgrounds and monuments before finding a nice cafe for lunch (and an escape from the cold).
The day after New Year's we had booked to visit the Parque de Atracciones de Madrid. It was still chilly, but we got to ride a lot of rides in the morning before rains moved in, which forced most of the rides to close. Jude, our thrill seeker, was understandably disappointed. We tried to wait the rain out playing Farkle, but it was persistent!
On our last day, we did some shopping, enjoyed jamon y manchengo sandwiches and took the metro into the city to have pineapple gelato one final time.
Nana and Pops offered to take the kids home so Pete and I could have some time in the city to check out a beer bar he had on his list. We managed a bit more shopping, a stop at the beer pub, saw a street parade (with Piets!), and snagged an outside table at a famous shrimp tapas restaurant (while a local band serenaded the patrons inside. A nice final evening feeling like locals in Madrid!

Always hard to leave vacation and return to reality, but the forecasted snow had us all very excited! Really grateful to Dave and Cathy for making our Madrid trip possible!
