On the Sunday of our camping weekend, we rented a boat and explored de Biesbosch National Park, which is one of the last extensive areas of freshwater tidal wetlands in NW Europe. The Biesbosch consists of a large network of rivers and smaller and larger creeks with islands (thank you, Wikipedia).
We had a beautiful day for it and joined all of the other boaters through the park. After getting a feel for the boat and the waterways, we let the kids have turns being the captain. In a particularly windy and narrow bit, unfortunately one of our kid captains ran us into an overhanging tree and we lost our flag! Could have been worse ;) The boat company, Diepstraten, was very kind and didn't take any of our deposit, so I would definitely recommend them!
There are no concessions or facilities once you are on the water so we brought lots of food and drinks. We made two stops to check out beach areas and let the kids run off some energy. No luck seeing any beavers, but there were lots of birds as advertised. Sara has been to the park to just walk and says there are other really nice areas to explore by foot as well. Another gem an hour from home!
